Schoolgirl Byebye — A Decade of Music, Memory and Movement

A BAND MADE OF LIFE AND LOVE

Schoolgirl Byebye isn’t a name you stumble across often, but once you do, their music has a way of holding you longer than expected.

Schoolgirl Byebye took their name from School Girl Bye Bye, an album by the Japanese rock band Number Girl. The Lead Drummer Geng Sheng Zai named the band casually as a nod to the music that inspired them at the beginning of their journey. The name reflects a blend of homage and identity, rooted in the DIY spirit of indie music that would come to define the band’s sound.

'如果这个爱不存在的话,我不会做这个乐队。‘
’If the love doesn't exist anymore, I won't continue this band.'
——Geng Sheng Zai

The band formed in Nanjing in 2015 by vocalist/guitarist Yang Yue and drummer Geng Shengzai, Schoolgirl Byebye began initially as a creative get-together for close friends who shared the same musical chemistry. Slowly but surely, the band turned into an internationally recognised indie band.

Over the past decade, the band expanded its lineup, released multiple albums and EPs, and carved out a distinctive place in the Chinese indie band scene. In their early years, they were recognised as one of China’s most promising emerging acts, winning Best Newcomer at the Douban Music Awards soon after their debut.

During the band's Ocenania tour, UpCloud Studios took on a bonding media partner role. Over time, a natural connection formed between the band and our team, especially with our founder. It was mainly shaped by interests and a similar way of seeing both music and life.

Our exclusive interview with the band members for our unreleased program 听见 Voices, also increased our initial bond, being away from the stage, they opened up about experiences and stories that are rarely shared, offering a side fo themselves that audiences do not get to see beyond performances and brief onstage moments.

‘爱是......你愿意花时间,分享人生。’
‘Love is...Willingly spending time to get to know each other’

AUSTRALIA, FINALLY

Sold-out rooms, long journeys, and the weight of shared emotion

The Australian leg of Schoolgirl ByeBye’s tour unfolded with a quiet intensity that stayed with us long after the shows ended. Melbourne sold out, Sydney was packed, and the journey between cities carried its own weight, long travel days, quick turnarounds, and a growing sense of anticipation.

In the crowd were fans who had waited years to see them live, some visibly emotional as the music began. There were tears, stillness, and moments where the room seemed to breathe together — reminders that these songs had travelled far, and that for many, this wasn’t just a concert, but a long-held connection finally realised.

We look forward to their return to Australia, and we’ve been equally touched by the overwhelming messages from fans hoping to see them again.
